Many bloggers tend to carelessly build blogs without giving much thought on what blog topic they should tackle on their blogs. A blog topic is the subject matter that the blog will be focusing on all throughout its life span.

Personal blogs have no problem on looking for a blog topic because they can tackle anything that they want. Niche blogs on the other hand needs to be planned carefully because it is one of the most critical stages in the development of a blog.

The number of topics that a blogger can tackle is virtually limitless. However, this wide selection only makes it difficult for a blogger to choose a topic for his blog. Picking by random would be foolish. What we need to do is to pick a blog topic carefully and methodically.

When I try to think of a new topic for a blog, I consider the following factors:

Own interest on the topic – This is an important factor. The more that you have interest on a particular topic, the more it will be easier for you to come up with content. Also, this will also be the basis if you truly know what you are talking about. Don’t try to force yourself on a topic that you don’t know, you’ll only end with half-baked articles.

Overall interest of others on the topic – We must also consider if there are other people who are willing to read your topic. In other words, do you have a good number of audiences for that topic? It would be hard for a blog to grow if there is only little audience.

Popularity of the topic – One thing that would greatly contribute to a blog’s growth is the overall popularity of a topic. A popular topic is equal to high traffic. For example, a blog topic on IPhone would be a wise choice at this time because of has an overwhelming popularity on the net.

Competition – Many bloggers often neglect the effect of competition in choosing a topic for a blog. Having a lot of competition would be very difficult especially if you are going to compete with well established blogs on that topic, especially on popular topics. A popular topic may be equal to high traffic, however, this traffic is divided on the number of blogs focusing on that topic.

Earning capability – This usually depends if the blogger is thinking of monetizing the blog that he will be creating. There are lots of monetization options that a blog can make use of in order to earn money, however, the earning capability differs depending on the topic of choice.

The factors above act as a guide for you to follow when choosing a blog topic, however, keep in mind that these factors must be weighed against each other and it depends on the blogger which factors should be considered most.

For example, a blog topic on beauty products may not be a good choice in terms of popularity, however, it has some high potential in earning money because there are some advertisers who are willing to pay for their products to be endorsed.

So there you have it. A more methodical way to determining what blog topic you should put up on your blog. Remember that this method takes up a lot of time and thinking in order to get the desired blog topic. So be patient.
