Reporter: We’re here on the outskirts of the blogosphere, witnessing how a terrible monster is slowly wreaking havoc on every blog in its wake. As you can see, ladies and gentlemen, the monster spews out harsh comments from its mouth causing casualties of broken egos and enthusiasm that count up to millions. What is this monster? Where did it come from?
Many of us sought the refuge of blogging for the freedom of self-expression. We build up our own blogs silently, swaying to the blow of the winds. All we ever wanted was a peaceful life happily pushing the publish buttons on our blogs.
But like any happy fairy tale (yes, fairy tale), you found out that the world is not as peaceful as you thought, especially when you experience your very first blog attack.
Briefing room
Blog attack? Oh my! Should I call the cops?
A blog attack is a term used on attacks that are directed to a particular blog. This could be in the form of a comment, a blog post, adsense, flagging, and even blog hacking. But whatever method that is used it is only designed to do one thing: To ruin a blogger’s day.
I have listed them all here so that you could be aware of what dangers your blog will face as you delve deeper into the blogosphere hole. Go through each of them so you could have a better understanding of why the blogosphere is not such a safe place at all.
- Blog attack through comment
Perhaps all of us may have our own share of negative comments throughout our whole blogging lives. Of course, these negative comments are usually a sign of disagreement which comes from our readers, which is only normal.Comment attacks usually come from an anonymous identity. They are comments that are more negatively outspoken that would surely make any blogger twitch. Before throwing these comments immediately into the bin, you may also want to read it first. Sometimes these negative comments are a way for you to know if there is anything wrong about what you are doing that made them comment about it.
Blog attack through blog post
There are also those who are more upfront. They reply or react negatively to your blog through a blog post on theirs.
Some blog attacks through a blog post don’t necessarily mean that it is a bad thing. People would not go to posting reactions on their blog if they don’t see anything wrong about your blog that is worth a post. They post it on their blogs as a way of sharing their thoughts to others about your blog, hoping that they could be able to get some readers to agree with their opinion.
Of course, there are some who make use of this method to gain a considerable amount of buzz on their blog, which is an effective method (although not advisable) in gaining attention in the blogosphere. Just pitch in a comment, make it controversial enough and visitors would start pouring in.
The two mentioned above are commonly spurred by difference of opinion that is not as serious compared to the other three that can be found below. These three are more into causing destruction than pointing out differences in ideals.
- Blog attack through adsense
What better way to bring a business down than to sabotage its mode of income. A blog attack on adsense is as easy as making 20 consecutive clicks on an adsense or an ad of a blog.People are helpless from this method because once google finds out a fraud click, you can say goodbye to your adsense because you might not be seeing it again.Blog attack through flagging
If you look at the blogs that are hosted on a free blog host platform like blogger or wordpress.com, you would see something like a “Flag this†button on top of a blog’s navigation bar. This button can be clicked by anyone if they think a blog is breaching the terms and conditions of the blog platform (for example, spam blogs, content robbing, and such).
With one click of this button, you may find your blog on hold or “on review†by the proper authorities. You will be prohibited to access your account for a period of time and your blog will be temporarily shut down.
Unlike the blog attack through adsense, you could get your blog back once the authorities have confirmed that your blog is not in breach of the agreement.
Blog attack through blog hacking
By far, this could be the worst type of blog attack that is known to bloggers. What happens is that a hacker takes control of your blog by gaining access to your system. It can be through a security leak on your blog platform or plugins.
The ones that are usually targeted with this method are the standalone blogs that rely on paid blog hosting because they are easily infiltrated.
All you can do to protect your blog from this attack is to make a backup of your blog on your computer and change your password regularly.
So there you have it. Blog attacks that you should be aware of especially when your blog becomes well known. Remember, blogging is a harsh world, you must be strong enough to endure it.
On the next part of this series, I will be discussing about how you could defend yourself from these attacks. Don’t get left behind by subscribing to my feeds!
